Japan to Launch “Remote Work Visa”

The Japan Digital Nomad Visa falls under the “Designated Activities (Notification No.53)” residency category and is designed for foreign professionals who wish to live temporarily in Japan while continuing remote work for non-Japanese companies or clients.

Applicants must demonstrate a genuine and ongoing employment or contractual relationship with overseas entities, along with stable and sufficient income. The permitted period of stay is up to six months and is non-renewable. During this time, visa holders may engage in remote work such as software development, consulting, design, content creation, or international business management.

Employment by Japanese companies or providing services primarily to domestic Japanese clients is strictly prohibited. Eligible applicants typically include remote employees of overseas companies, international freelancers, and owners or executives managing foreign businesses remotely. Spouses and dependent children may accompany the main applicant under a corresponding designated activities status, subject to the same duration limits.
